PREFACE

As a soldier, you can be sent to any area of the world. It may be in a temperate, tropical, arctic, or subarctic region. You expect to have all your personal equipment and your unit members with you wherever you go. However, there is no guarantee it will be so. You could find yourself alone in a remote area—possibly enemy territory—with little or no personal gear. This manual provides information and describes basic techniques that will enable you to survive and return alive should you find yourself in such a situation.

If you are a trainer, use this information as a base on which to build survival training. You know the areas to which your unit is likely to deploy, the means by which it will travel, and the territory through which it will travel. Read what this manual says about survival in those particular areas and find out all you can about those areas. Read other books on survival. Develop a survival-training program that will enable your unit members to meet any survival situation they may face. It can make the difference between life and death.

Before You Buy

Q: Who is this audiobook for?

A: This audiobook is vital for preppers, hikers, hunters, campers, outdoorspeople, military personnel, pilots, travelers, and anyone who wants to learn practical survival principles while driving, exercising, traveling, or otherwise away from a printed book.

Q: What does the audiobook cover?

A: It covers survival psychology, planning, survival kits, basic medicine, shelters, water procurement, firecraft, food procurement, plants, animals, weapons and tools, desert survival, tropical survival, cold-weather survival, sea survival, expedient water crossings, field-expedient direction finding, signaling, recovery, and survival in hostile areas.

Q: Is this mainly a wilderness survival book?

A: Wilderness survival is a major part of the material, but the scope is much broader. It also addresses medical emergencies, signaling, navigation, evasion, hostile environments, water survival, climatic extremes, improvised tools, and the mental discipline required to cope with isolation and danger.

Q: Is it useful for civilian listeners?

A: Yes. Although written for soldiers who may become isolated in remote or hostile areas, many of the underlying skills are directly relevant to civilian emergencies. Hikers, hunters, campers, pilots, travelers, and preparedness-minded listeners can all benefit from the sections on shelter, water, fire, food, medicine, navigation, signaling, and environmental survival.

Q: Is this the old FM 21-76 survival manual?

A: No. This edition contains FM 3-05.70, the extensively revised successor to FM 21-76. It is a much larger work and incorporates several hundred pages of material beyond the familiar older survival manual.

Q: Is a survival manual well suited to audiobook format?

A: Yes, particularly for learning principles, priorities, planning methods, environmental considerations, and the reasoning behind survival decisions. Audio makes it possible to absorb a very large body of material during time that would not normally be available for reading.

Q: What kinds of material are especially useful in audio?

A: Subjects such as survival psychology, planning, shelter, water, fire, food, medical priorities, climate-specific survival, signaling, recovery, and hostile-environment considerations translate particularly well to listening. These topics can be studied and revisited without needing to remain at a desk with the manual open.

Q: Is this suitable for beginners?

A: Yes. The material begins with fundamental survival priorities and techniques and builds from there. It is accessible to newcomers while still broad enough to reward repeated listening by experienced outdoorspeople and preparedness enthusiasts.

Q: Why choose the audiobook rather than the print or ebook edition?

A: The audiobook is the most convenient choice for sustained learning while commuting, exercising, traveling, or working. Readers who need to inspect diagrams, plant illustrations, tables, or other visual reference material in detail may prefer to use the audio edition alongside the print or ebook version.
