Introduction

Marine Corps forces are employed across the entire range of military operations. Those operations include war (characterized by large-scale, sustained combat operations) and other military operations that focus on deterring aggression, resolving conflict, promoting peace, and supporting civil authorities. These operations can occur before, during, and after combat operations.

Marines always need to be prepared to carry out their mission and adapt to changing levels of threat and unexpected situations. Whenever the situation warrants the application of deadly force, the Marine rifleman must be able to deliver well-aimed shots to eliminate the adversary. Marines must have the versatility, flexibility, and skills to deal with a situation at any level of intensity across the entire range of military operations.

Combat-ready Marines must be skilled in tactics and proficient in the use of firearms. Well-trained Marines will have the confidence required to deliver accurate fire under the most adverse battle conditions.

The Service rifle is the primary tool that an individual Marine uses to obtain dominance over the enemy and neutralize the effects of enemy weapons. The Marine Corps Combat Rifle Program progresses the individual Marine from the fundamentals of marksmanship to advanced combat shooting, ensuring the ability to masterfully employ the Service rifle under all conditions.

Q: Who is this book for?

A: This handbook is for Marines, military and law-enforcement personnel, firearms instructors, competition shooters, and civilian owners of M16-, M4-, and AR-pattern rifles who want a structured approach to rifle marksmanship. It is particularly useful for readers interested in how the Marine Corps develops shooters from basic fundamentals to advanced combat-oriented proficiency.

Q: What does the handbook cover?

A: It covers service-rifle operation, marksmanship fundamentals, firing positions, aiming and trigger control, zeroing, target detection, range estimation, multiple and moving targets, movement in combat, low-light engagements, night vision, illumination, and the use of modern aiming devices.

Q: Is this mainly a basic rifle-shooting manual?

A: No. The handbook starts with core marksmanship fundamentals but progresses into increasingly demanding skills, including target prioritization, moving targets, combat movement, low-light shooting, and night operations. Its purpose is to develop a rifleman who can apply accurate fire under varied and difficult conditions.

Q: Is it useful if I own an AR-15 rather than a military M16 or M4?

A: Yes. The manual is written around Marine Corps service rifles and carbines, so some equipment and procedures are military-specific, but the underlying principles of stability, aiming, trigger control, recoil management, zeroing, range estimation, target engagement, and practical shooting transfer readily to civilian AR-pattern rifles.

Q: What makes this different from a conventional commercial rifle book?

A: This is official Marine Corps instructional material rather than one author's preferred shooting system. It presents rifle proficiency as a progressive training program designed to produce reliable performance under field and combat conditions, combining traditional marksmanship with more advanced weapon-employment skills.

Q: Does the book cover practical combat shooting as well as traditional marksmanship?

A: Yes. Precision and sound fundamentals remain central, but the handbook also addresses target detection, multiple and moving targets, movement, low-light engagements, night vision, and other situations in which the shooter must apply those fundamentals under more complex conditions.

Q: Is this the older Marine Corps rifle marksmanship manual?

A: No. This edition contains MCRP 8-10B.2, which superseded the pre-2016 MCRP 3-01A publication. It therefore presents the later Marine Corps treatment of rifle marksmanship rather than simply reproducing the older manual.

Q: Why is Marine Corps rifle doctrine particularly useful as a reference?

A: The Marine Corps places unusually strong institutional emphasis on every Marine being a rifleman. As a result, the handbook treats rifle proficiency as a core professional skill and develops it systematically from fundamental marksmanship through more advanced combat application.

Q: Is the physical edition suitable for training and reference use?

A: Yes. This complete, unabridged edition runs to more than 250 pages and is presented in a full-size 8.5 × 11-inch format, giving the detailed text and illustrations plenty of room to remain clear. It is well suited to repeated study, range preparation, and reference.
