Before You Press NAV: A Simple Briefing for Flying With Automation

A glass cockpit can reduce workload, but only if you know what it is doing now, what it will do next, and how you will take control when the plan changes.

Automation is most helpful when it removes routine work without removing the pilot from the flight. The catch is simple: an autopilot, GPS, or integrated flight display cannot read your intention. It follows the mode, target, and route currently selected—which may not be the one you believe you selected.

That is why a short automation briefing is worth making before a busy phase of flight. It gives you a repeatable way to check what the system is doing, what it is armed to do next, and what you will do if it does something unexpected. This is a planning habit, not a substitute for the aircraft flight manual, approved procedures, recurrent training, or a qualified instructor.

Think in terms of flight path, not buttons

A button label is not a plan. “NAV,” “APR,” “ALT,” and “FLC” can mean very different things depending on the aircraft, the selected source, the active leg, and whether a mode is active or merely armed.

Start instead with one plain-language statement: What path do I expect the airplane to fly, and what constraints must it meet? For example: maintain the assigned altitude, track the active course to the next waypoint, then capture the next assigned altitude only when cleared. The wording will differ by flight, but the habit forces the pilot to separate the intended result from the method used to command it.

Advanced avionics are especially useful for learning this discipline because integrated displays bring navigation, engine information, flight instruments, and automated flight control into one working environment. The FAA Advanced Avionics Handbook is a useful reference for understanding those systems and the operational questions they create.

A four-part automation briefing

  1. Name the present job. Say what the system should be doing now: holding a heading, tracking a course, maintaining an altitude, climbing, or descending. If you cannot describe the current task in a sentence, pause before adding another instruction.
  2. Name the next event. Identify the next change you expect: a waypoint turn, altitude capture, level-off, approach intercept, or a return to manual control. Automation surprises often occur at transitions, not during steady cruise.
  3. Verify the evidence. Check the mode annunciations and the primary flight display according to your aircraft’s procedures. Then compare the commanded result with the actual flight path. The display should confirm both what is active now and what is waiting to happen.
  4. Choose an exit. Know the immediate, approved way to stop or simplify the automation if the airplane does not do what you expect. That may mean disconnecting the autopilot, selecting a simpler mode, or hand-flying—but the correct action depends on the aircraft and situation. Decide before workload rises.

This is deliberately brief. Its value is that it can be repeated after a reroute, an altitude amendment, a runway change, or any other event that alters the plan.

Watch for the three common traps

1. Programming while the airplane needs you

A route amendment or approach setup can absorb attention for longer than expected. Do not let heads-down programming compete with aircraft control, terrain awareness, traffic scanning, communications, or a rapidly changing phase of flight. If time is short, use the simplest safe option available: delay the task, ask ATC for time or vectors when appropriate, or hand-fly while you regain the picture.

2. Assuming “armed” means “active”

An armed mode is a promise about a future condition, not proof that the system is performing that task now. A pilot who expects an altitude capture, a course intercept, or an approach mode should keep checking until the intended change has actually occurred.

3. Treating the display as a substitute for outside awareness

Synthetic vision, moving maps, terrain displays, and alerts can improve awareness, but they do not eliminate the need to understand limitations, currency, annunciations, weather, aircraft performance, and the world outside the windshield. Good automation management keeps the pilot ahead of the airplane; it does not turn monitoring into passive observation.

Make “what is it doing?” a spoken question

A useful check after every meaningful input is: What did I ask for? What is active? What happens next? In a crew, say it aloud and seek confirmation. Flying alone, a quiet verbal callout can still interrupt assumption and focus attention on the mode display and the actual aircraft response.

Use this habit first in low-workload conditions, with an instructor or in a simulator if available. Learn the specific logic of the avionics installed in your aircraft, including how they behave after a missed approach, a changed route, a failed sensor, or an autopilot disconnect. A pilot who understands the system’s normal sequence is better placed to recognize an abnormal one early.

The aim is not to avoid automation. It is to use it actively: set a clear objective, verify the mode, monitor the path, and be ready to simplify. That is the difference between letting a system fly the airplane and managing a system that helps you fly it.
