Why Your GPS Track Is Not Your Planned Course

A moving-map display is a superb navigation aid, but it does not replace understanding course, heading, groundspeed, and visual checkpoints. Here is a practical way to make a simple VFR flight log useful.

A GPS can draw a neat magenta line to the destination, yet still leave a pilot poorly prepared for a wrong turn, an unexpected headwind, or a screen that suddenly becomes less useful. The cure is not to distrust GPS. It is to understand the small set of navigation ideas that lets you check what the device is telling you.

The crucial distinction is this: course is the intended path over the ground; heading is the direction the aircraft’s nose points; and track is the path the aircraft actually makes over the ground. Wind is why the three may differ.

Start with a route you can describe without the screen

Before departure, divide a cross-country route into sensible legs. Choose checkpoints that are conspicuous, durable, and easy to distinguish from the air: a shoreline bend, a large lake, a highway interchange, a town at the junction of two rail lines, or a prominent ridge. Avoid relying on small buildings, isolated trees, or features likely to be hidden by haze.

For each leg, record the true course, distance, planned altitude, forecast wind, estimated groundspeed, and estimated time en route. This is not ceremonial paperwork. It gives you a prediction that can be tested in flight.

Course, heading, and track: the wind triangle in plain English

Suppose the desired course is due east. With no wind, the planned heading and track may also be east. Add a wind from the north, however, and the airplane will drift south unless the pilot points slightly north of east. The nose may be aimed northeast while the aircraft’s actual track remains east.

That correction is called a wind-correction angle. Its purpose is simple: cancel drift. A GPS can show the resulting track, but a pilot who understands the relationship can recognize when a developing wind, a mistaken setting, or a misidentified landmark has upset the plan.

Use the chart’s directional references carefully. Winds aloft and many flight-planning calculations use true direction; the magnetic compass and conventional heading reference require the local magnetic conversion. Aircraft-specific compass deviation and the approved cockpit equipment remain part of the real-world answer, so use current charts, current weather, and the aircraft’s own approved information rather than a generic example as a flight authority.

Make a time check early, not after you are lost

A checkpoint becomes valuable when you give it an expected arrival time. On reaching it, compare the clock with the flight log. If you are early, your groundspeed is higher than planned; if you are late, it is lower. Either result is a cue to reconsider the next leg’s estimated time and fuel picture.

The basic relationship is straightforward: groundspeed equals distance divided by time. If a 30-nautical-mile leg takes 20 minutes, the groundspeed is 90 knots. The arithmetic matters less than the habit: identify where you are, note when you arrived, and update the prediction before a small error becomes a large one.

A late checkpoint does not automatically mean poor navigation. It may reflect a stronger headwind than forecast. But it should prompt questions: Is the next fuel stop still prudent? Has the weather changed? Does the actual track agree with the chart and the landscape? Good navigation is continuous comparison, not a single calculation made on the ground.

Use GPS as a cross-check, not a substitute for awareness

For VFR flying, the FAA advises integrating GPS with pilotage and dead reckoning. Pilotage means navigating by recognized features on the ground. Dead reckoning means projecting position from a known point using direction, time, speed, and wind. Together, they provide independent ways to answer the question that matters most: “Where am I, and what evidence supports that answer?”

A practical scan is brief: confirm the moving-map position, look outside for the expected checkpoint and terrain, compare the current track and groundspeed with the log, then look ahead to the next feature. If those pieces disagree, resolve the disagreement while the uncertainty is small. Do not keep flying merely because the display looks confident.

A simple preflight routine

  1. Choose identifiable checkpoints. Mark features that can be recognized from the air and occur at useful intervals along the route.
  2. Build a leg-by-leg log. Note course, distance, planned altitude, forecast wind, estimated groundspeed, and estimated time for each leg.
  3. Brief the route in words. Be able to state the first checkpoint, the next major feature, available airports, and the basic terrain picture without consulting the display.
  4. Check the first checkpoint promptly. Compare the expected and actual arrival times, then revise later estimates if the actual groundspeed differs materially from plan.
  5. Keep independent evidence. Use the chart, outside references, time, and GPS together. If they conflict, slow down the decision-making and establish a reliable position before pressing on.
